Another Day

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Well today was supposed to be much more productive than it was, so I’m hoping to get some work done here now. It seems I don’t work as well when my wife is around… I guess she distracts me. Well I have been tinkering with the idea of a family website for a few months now. I had the idea to write it in ASP.net which I am just learning, but I decided that if I really want to get it off the ground it will have to be php. Reasons, I know it better and its cheaper to get a linux server than windows… So thats what I am about to do. I was looking for a good blogging software, and as I like this, It won’t suit for what I want in the Family site - well I don’t think I quite know what I want. I guess we will see. Anyway, I am about to take off on this new adventure! Oh, I did finish the Mission Email project today - took about an hour for 276 Sent messages to be copied over and saved as pdf files. Now, I’m officially done!

Projects…

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Well I have been thinking of writing a blog for some time, however I never seem to be able to sit myself down and do it. I imagine many of you know how I feel. I have lists and lists of projects that I am constantly working on, bit by bit, and I just never get it all done. Well, hold the applause, I finished a project tonight. I checked if off my list! AND, its one that really has been on the list for a couple of years now. When I got home from my mission I decided that it would be cool if I could get a copy of all of the emails that were sent to me while i was on my mission - i don’t think I got the sent folder though… Anyway, I was able through some tricks and things that I no longer remember get the emails downloaded into an outlook PST folder - but I guess I didn’t know what to do from there. I wanted to be able to have the emails as files, but there wasn’t any way to get them out. (I tried creating a program that would extract them out, and got a bit done, but never finished) This was probably my first project when I got back from my mission. So a couple of months back I found an old cd that had the files on it. I decided that I would stick it in my “My Projects” folder (right now it has like 20 folders in it…) There it sat until the other day I decided I was going to do something with it. I didn’t yet know, however I was able to upload the files into Outlook on my work computer. Great start! I could at least read the emails. Well i wanted them on my laptop, and I was here, and my email was at work so I setup my BYU webmail with Imap and loaded the folder into my inbox. I then logged on and downloaded the folder into thunderbird on my computer and viola! I had my emails! Today I went through and Printed them all off as PDF files using pdf creator. Now I have a folder with about 100 emails from my family while I was on my mission. Pretty nice! 1 project down - and a bunch more to go! - OK, I just found out it is only a half done project - I found my sent mail and now need to finish with that. Another day! Off to bed!
